Minnesota latest state to step up with BMP guidelines for golf courses

Minnesota GCSA leads the development of statewide best management practices with grant from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America

Lawrence, Kan. (March 27, 2018) – A collaborative effort by members of the Minnesota Golf Course Superintendents Association and related organizations in the state and region has resulted in publication of four manuals focused on best management practices (BMPs) for Minnesota golf courses.

Although the foundation for the Minnesota BMP initiative began more than nine years ago, the Minnesota GCSA manuals were developed in part by using the BMP Planning Guide and Template created by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) and funded and supported by the USGA.

The affiliated chapter received an $8,750 BMP grant that GCSAA funded through the association’s Environmental Institute for Golf (EIFG) in part by PGA Tour. The BMP grant program provides funding through the EIFG to chapters for developing new guides, updating existing guides or for verification programs. GCSAA’s goal is to have all 50 states offer established BMPs by 2020.

Jack MacKenzie, CGCS, Minnesota GCSA executive director, said that while superintendents in the state were the drivers of the movement, the project drew the attention of other entities that made the final creation a truly collaborative effort.

“It really opened the door to a growing relationship with our allied associations in Minnesota,” MacKenzie said. “The BMPs were the catalyst to get together, and now we meet on a regular basis.”

In addition to the University of Minnesota, other organizations that contributed to the BMP initiative included Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota Department of Agriculture, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Minnesota Golf Association, Upper Midwest Chapter of the Club Managers Association, Minnesota Chapter of the Professional Golfers Association and the Midwest Chapter of the Golf Course Owners Association.

Of the four documents that encompass the BMPs, the “Best Management Practices Water-Use Efficiency/Conservation Plan For Minnesota Golf Courses” has drawn particular attention from the state’s Department of Natural Resources.

“Golf is the first industry to really step up and support the Department of Natural Resource’s reaction to a recent judgment against them,” MacKenzie said. “Nine local metro courses met with a representative of the DNR. He put the newly created BMP water document on the table, and he said, ‘this is what we’re working with, this is good.’”

K-MOTION Announces National Release of K-COACH

Ultimate Coaching Platform Completes Re-brand from K-VEST to K-COACH

(SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.) K-MOTION Interactive – the pioneer of innovative, wearable human motion training applications for golf, baseball, softball, fitness, physical therapy and beyond – has officially released K-COACH, a revolutionary instruction-based platform which provides coaches of all-levels with the measurement and training tools to transform their students’ games.

Since 2002, K-MOTION certified golf professionals have been helping everyone from PGA TOUR winners to high handicappers unlock their best golf by optimizing how the body functions during the golf swing. For the past three years, the company has been working to create a new, transformative coaching platform that builds on the acclaimed K-VEST. This national release officially completes the rebranding of the company’s flagship product from K-VEST to K-COACH.

Following a successful debut at the 2018 PGA Show, K-COACH empowers golf professionals of all-levels to better measure, understand, coach and train players. The system allows the coach to understand a student’s movement, so that they can prescribe precise drills designed to spark rapid improvement and ensure these drills are completed perfectly, every time. With the introduction of wrist angle measurement, coaches can understand how the clubface behaves throughout the swing, while launch monitor integration identifies how the player’s swing directly affects the distance and accuracy of the player’s ball.

“Our team could not be more excited to bring K-COACH to market,” said K-MOTION CEO Michael Chu. “This is the ultimate teaching solution for coaches who demand a complete learning system that benefits both their students and their business.”

A groundbreaking feature being introduced in K-COACH is ‘Train Shot.’ The process is both simple and revolutionary: coaches of all levels auto-capture a group of swings, pick the best one or use the average of the group and then let the automated swing fitting feature convert the data into a customized training program that helps players replicate and improve upon their best swing. All of this is delivered through the patented biofeedback training and a cloud-based coaching platform that has made K-MOTION a leader in golf instruction.

“A coach doesn’t need to look at numbers anymore to benefit from 3D and biofeedback,” said Tony Morgan, Head of Golf at K-MOTION. “All they do is find the player’s best shot, capture it and train it. We’ve built the world’s first instant camera for transferring motion to biofeedback training.”

According to Golf Digest, seven of the top-15 golf instructors in America use K-MOTION products for better training. This includes instructors to some of the biggest PGA TOUR superstars in the world. Beyond golf, Major League Baseball teams such as the Seattle Mariners, major universities and select National Hockey League teams also rely on K-MOTION’s revolutionary system to help their athletes achieve optimum movement and performance.

K-MOTION is the industry leader in wearable, motion-training technology that makes athletes better faster. The company’s products (including K-COACH and K-PLAYER) create the complete learning solution: from diagnosis, to supervised instruction, to unsupervised practice. Through patented real-time audio and visual cues, athletes can connect perception and reality and master perfect motion in seconds. K-MOTION creates a seamless connection between player and coach through its cloud-based improvement sequence of measure, assess, coach and train.

K-MOTION’s cloud-based products provide the complete learning solution to enhance the measurement, understanding, coaching and training of athletes. Medical grade inertial sensors capture data that best-in-class software evaluates to enable deeper understanding of athletes and diagnose inefficient movement by revealing what the eye can’t see. This understanding is then applied through patented real-time audio and visual cues to coach and train athletes. K-MOTION athletes connect perception and reality to master perfect motion in seconds. According to Golf Digest, seven of the top-15 golf instructors in America use K-MOTION products for better training. In addition, Major League Baseball and National Hockey League teams apply the company’s solutions. Leading golf swing video analysis platform delivers innovative new app to help golfers improve their game.

Ann Arbor, MI –  V1 Sports (V1), producers of the leading golf video instruction technology platform for teaching pros and golfers, has released a new V1 Golf IOS App and it is receiving rave reviews from golfers across the globe.

The V1 team listened intently to their customers and is confident that the V1 Golf 2.1 app builds upon the functionality that makes it the most-awarded swing analyzer app in the world.

“The new release is an example of our passion for empowering instructors and golfers to be their best,” Chris McGinley, CEO of V1 Sports, said. “By asking the right questions and listening closely to our users, we continue to help them improve.”

Targeted at golfers, the new release is the largest update since the app debuted in 2010 and is loaded with enhanced features and a new user interface that better facilitates golf instruction and mobile learning.

The new app helps golfers capture their swing on video and share it with their V1 teaching pro, so that they can receive digital lessons and instruction at home, on the range, or on the road. The app allows V1 instructors to deliver lessons created with V1’s Pro software that include video, telestration, voiceover and content directly to their students’ mobile device.

The V1 Golf app also allows the golfer to have fun learning by analyzing their swing using the tools and content.  In addition, the V1 Golf Plus subscription allows golfers access to one of the largest libraries of tour swings for comparison and exclusive tips and drills.

Long time users and newcomers alike are giving the release two thumbs up.

“V1 Golf App 2.1 is terrific…record your swing, edit the video, then analyze it with a variety of helpful tools.  For those of us who work on improving our game. I don’t know how it gets any better than the new V1 golf app,” said one user testimonial.

Another said: “Wow, I haven’t used everything yet, but man it looks fantastic! Trimming was awesome, and playback was in portrait or landscape. I’m very happy so far!”

The first thing users will notice about the V1 Golf 2.1 app is an updated video manager. A cleaner, more intuitive design that keeps swing videos and lessons better organized.

V1 users are dedicated to the game of golf, and V1 has created new tag, search and sort functions that help users navigate the swing videos they store.

One of V1’s avid users summed it up best: “I love the new and improved update. Perfect to store your swings and lessons.  With access to PGA, LPGA, and Champions Tour player swings, it’s a must have for everyone looking to improve and keep track of their golf game.”

AIA Guide to New York City, 50 Years Later

Last week I happened upon and bought a first printing of the AIA Guide to New York City. Edited by Norval White and Elliot Willensky, the guide was first published in 1967/68 and has been updated four times since then. I include both 1967 and 1968, since the book's copyright indicates both years and various sources point to either 1967 or 1968. A "from the stacks" blog post at the New York Historical Society Museum & Library from October last year clears things up, revealing that the guide was created as a paperback for the AIA's annual meeting in NYC in 1967 and then printed the following year as a $6.95 hardback.

Whichever year is adopted, the book's 50th anniversary hasn't elicited much in the way of celebration. I'm not aware of anything outside of the Historical Society blog post. The most recent update to the guide was done in 2010, and even though the AIA Conference on Architecture is being held in NYC this year, I'm not aware of any plans for a sixth edition to coincide with it.

So this look at the first edition is a celebration of sorts of the AIA Guide's 50th birthday. It's based on a quick glance through the book, rather than a deep dive into how well it works, which wouldn't make sense all these decades later. That said, below are the things that stood out for me; things outside of the main entries, whose brevity and tone have remained stable over subsequent editions; things that didn't continue, that I'm aware of, with later editions.

Hardcover yet lightweight:

The combination of hardcover, lightweight pages, and only 464 pages make the book a nice object and one that is easier to hold than the 1,088 page fifth edition. I'm guessing the first printing had a dust jacket, but the copy I found is missing one. Nevertheless, the bold title on the cover and binding make it a handsome book even without a wrapper.

Style key:

I'm not a fan of books that require readers to memorize around a bunch of icons, particularly when the key to their meaning is difficult to access. But put the key on the endpapers — and make some pleasing wallpaper in the process — and it works pretty well.

Maps:

Later editions have walking tours within the chapters, but the maps aren't much help in navigating the routes. The maps in the first edition are very clear, with empty circles at the start, closed circles at the end, and arrows in between.

Sponsors:

The first AIA Guide to New York City has sixteen sponsors with ads interspersed throughout the book. While they helped pay for the book's realization, I don't think they did anything to reduce the cover price — $6.95 is nearly $50 in today's dollars, or $10 more than the fifth edition's cover price. Nevertheless, the ads provide another snapshot of how things were in 1968.

Restaurants:

An odd touch, since the restaurants are not described in terms of design, but some of the descriptions are great. In Chinatown, head to Joy Luck Coffee Shop: "No telephone. No booze. No reservation. The food is excellent, and cheap."

Back matter:

After 5 boroughs, 27 "sectors" and countless "precincts" (neighborhoods), the guide broadens to the scale of the city, with stats, descriptions, timelines, and illustrations (above) on its past and present. This part is a helpful addendum to the rest of the book, as is the index, which lists buildings by name and architect, but also has a style index and includes the walking tours.

It's easy to see why the above elements were dropped from later editions of the AIA Guide to New York City, but it's also great to see where it all started: the foundation for indispensable guides to the ever-changing city.

FOREST DUNES – THE LOOP: Reversible Course Swings into 2018 with New “Dual” Golf Experience Events

Tom Doak’s innovative design has captivated the golf and architecture industry

Roscommon, MI – When renowned golf course architect Tom Doak set out to create a unique design that would impress Forest Dunes owner Lew Thompson, he wasn’t sure if his dream of creating an 18-hole reversible golf course would be what Thompson wanted.

Thompson recalled the moment during a meeting in 2015 when Doak unveiled routings for two different golf courses.

“Tom asked me, ‘what if we build two golf courses?’

“I said Tom, let’s just build one and see how it goes before we build two.

“Then Tom said ‘what if I build you two for the price of one? Are you familiar with how golf got started at St Andrews? One day you would play it this way, and the next day you would play it that way.’”

Thompson said Doak then picked up another map and unrolled it next to the first one.

“He said ‘these are the same golf course,” Thompson said. “I can build you two for the price of one, and you will have, to my knowledge, the only 18-hole, 18-green, reversible golf course in the world.’”

Thompson was impressed especially when Doak indicated he had spent 30 years on the dream idea and drawings.

“All I needed was the right piece of property to do it,” Doak told him. “There are very few places that this could be done, and it can be done here.”

The Loop opened in 2017 to rave reviews across the industry. Golf Digest named it the Best New Public Course, and GOLF Magazine named it the Best New U.S. Course You Can Play.

Ron Whitten, Golf Digest’s Architecture Editor, wrote that the new 18-holes functioned as 36.

“Without ever posing the sensation of playing the wrong way down a fairway,” he reported.

The Loop, with its revolutionary reversible design, is a walking-only experience featuring the option of professional caddies. The two different layouts, Black-clockwise and Red-counter clockwise, alternate directions on a daily basis

GOLF Magazine praised the design by comparing it to a hit song with “one heckuva hook.”

Golfweek’s Brad Klein said: “It’s worth the journey, even if you have to spend an extra day to figure it out. One trip around each layout isn’t enough.”

A one-of-a-kind golf event where you can play a course forwards and backwards on the same-day. Really!

In 2018 golfers will get the unique opportunity to make a trip around The Loop in both directions on the same day. At Forest Dunes the special event days will be called “The Dual.”

With the Loop’s normal rotation of alternating routings on a daily basis (Red on even dates and Black on odd dates in 2018) there are three months (May, July, August) with 31-days where the even/odd schedule does not work. In essence the calendar has created an opportunity for Forest Dunes to create a special event on the 31st day of each of those months.

The Dual days will feature a two-person best-ball team event, where golfers play one direction (course) in the morning, then play the other direction (course) in the afternoon for a 36-hole one-day experience.

The three one-day events are open to all levels of players with a registered GHIN handicap and will award both Net and Gross champions. Lunch and dinner are included at a cost of between $225 and $275 per person. Visit https://ift.tt/2I9oAZK.com/golf/book-a-tee-time/golf-events for more information.

“The most popular question or thought among golfers after playing it in one direction, is ‘what is it like going the other way?’’ General Manager/PGA Director of Golf Chad Maveus said. “The Dual, playing both courses/directions in the same day, will be true bucket list golf. We have done it and I can honestly say there is nothing like this experience for golfers anywhere.”

Experience a most unique stay and play package with the Loop at Forest Dunes

Golfers building a stay-and-play golf package at Forest Dunes can experience a 54-hole package unlike any other with The Loop and Forest Dunes courses. Simply combine a lodging rate with the golf rates. Lodging options include the Lake AuSable Lodge, golf cottages, or the new golf villas. Rates can range depending on the time of the season from $59 to $149 per person. Golf rates on the original Forest Dunes course and The Loop course, depending on the time of season, range from $85 to $160.

In addition, Forest Dunes is providing a tribute rate during the summer months on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays on both courses for $85 for ladies, military and first responders as well as qualifying seniors age 55-and-over.

About Forest Dunes

Nestled on 1,300 acres of heavily wooded land within the Huron National Forest, Forest Dunes has become one of the country’s premier golf experiences. In this pristine setting Tom Weiskopf designed one of his top layouts featuring rugged native dunes, scruffy sand areas and water features. The course has been consistently ranked among the best courses by the leading golf publications. Golf Digest, which ranked its original Weiskopf course the Best New Course in the Country when it opened in 2002, currently ranks it No. 23 among its top public courses, and GOLF Magazine and Golfweek have also ranked it among their Top 100 courses. The unique and reversible Tom Doak design, The Loop, adds a second/third Best New Course to the golf experience at Forest Dunes. In addition, the property features the beautiful Adirondack style Clubhouse with Sangomore’s restaurant, Lake AuSable Lodge with 14-rooms, new golf villas, and cottages.

REKS® LAUNCHES HD DIGITAL PRESCRIPTION LENSES DELIVERED IN UNBREAKABLE FRAMES

Impact-Resistant Lenses With Greater Field of Vision and Improved Clarity Over Traditional Manufacturing Techniques

(Boca Raton, FLORIDA; March 12, 2018) REKS® eyewear is introducing a new line of prescription lenses through a partnership with Revolution Golf, golf’s largest direct-to-consumer digital platform and part of NBC Sports’ portfolio of lifestyle businesses. The campaign also will be supported through commercial spots on Golf Channel.

REKS® burst on the eyewear scene two years ago at www.reks.com with comfortable, fashionable and unbreakable frames paired with the best lens value in the marketplace — polycarbonate polarized lenses with anti-reflective coating for an incomparable price of $50.

“We paid close attention to customer feedback over the past two years and the most frequent request we received was whether we could provide prescription lenses in our unbreakable frames,” stated George Granoff. “Our team has met this challenge and can now offer prescription lenses featuring the industry’s best technology at excellent prices, true to REKS® tradition of packing a punch with style, comfort, quality and value.”

“Since its debut, REKS® eyewear has been popular with our golfers, thanks to its high-quality, polarized lenses that provide super-sharp clarity from fairway to green and their unbreakable frames that can withstand being tossed about in a golf bag or golf cart with no problem,” said Justin Tupper, founder of Revolution Golf.  “We are excited to launch the REKS® prescription line and are confident that golfers of all abilities will reap the benefits.”

REKS® prescription lenses will be manufactured with the latest freeform digital technology that produces a high definition lens with greater field of vision and improved clarity over traditional lens manufacturing techniques. Digital generators place the complete design and Rx, including the “add” power on the back of the lens, closer to the eye. “This type of digital pinpoint manufacturing cuts the lenses in hundredths of a diopter and not the usual 10th of a diopter, thus creating a lens that is 10-times more precise than the traditional manufacturing process,” added Granoff.

In addition to polycarbonate lenses that are the standard in the industry, REKS® is also pleased to offer Trivex lenses. Trivex lens material was originally developed for use by the military for helicopter windshields and fighter jet canopies. Then, in 2002, PPG Industries tailored the chemistry of the material specifically for use in optical lenses, making Trivex one of the most lightweight, impact-resistant eyeglass lens materials available.

Because of the way Trivex is manufactured, it has less chromatic distortion than a polycarbonate lens, resulting in a sharper visual experience. “A high definition Trivex prescription lens is what many eye care professionals consider to be the best combination of safety, comfort, appearance and optical performance,” said Granoff. “We are truly excited to offer this leading lens technology to our unbreakable frames to create a line of industry-leading eyewear for consumers who are looking for stylish and functional glasses at an affordable price.”

Anti-reflective coating makes such a difference in lens appearance and performance, REKS® will not deliver a lens without it. Therefore, AR is included for no additional charge. This microscopic coating eliminates light reflecting from the front and back surfaces of the lenses, giving the lenses a crystal-clear appearance. Additionally, all tints and gradient tints are offered at no additional charge.

REKS® provides a 30- day no-questions-asked money back guarantee in addition to a 1-year warranty against scratches.

REKS® HD single vision polycarbonate lenses with anti-reflective coating, including frame, will sell for $125.00

REKS® HD progressive polycarbonate lenses with anti-reflective coating, including frame, will sell for $225.00.

The new TS1, SONAR and Comfort PLUS grips feature Lamkin’s latest innovations designed to optimize performance, comfort and durability, while benefiting from unique characteristics appealing to a wide range of players.

The launch of the three new golf grips marks an exciting time in Lamkin’s 93 year history, as Bob Lamkin, CEO and President of Lamkin Grips explains, “We are always committed to delivering the highest quality, best feeling and most functional grips, but appreciate that every golfer will have a different take on those qualities.  We’ve spent the last year developing new materials, surface patterns and sizing to ensure every type of golfer has the best feeling and highest performing grip for their specific game.”

Each of the new grip lines use specific proprietary hybrid compounds designed to provide unparalleled performance, grip comfort and long-lasting durability. Lamkin has also developed innovative new Micro-Texture surface patterns for a more comfortable and confident grip connection. All of the grip lines are offered in Lamkin’s new PLUS shape featuring a straighter profile that is slightly larger in the lower hand. The reduced-taper profile, inspired by Tour players, helps to eliminate excess grip tension for greater shot control.

TS1 is a distinctive high-performance grip that delivers exceptional feel and performance. Made with new hybrid materials that are slightly softer than traditional rubbers, the TS1 retains exceptional durability and all-weather performance. The grip’s functional Micro-Texture Technology optimizes torsional stability and provides outstanding grip control. TS1 is an excellent choice for golfers who prefer a responsive, Tour-inspired and high-performance grip.

SONAR is an exceptionally appealing grip that offers both a comfortable, tacky feel with a high-performance material and a functional network of unique micro textures. The reduced-taper profile encourages the ideal light-pressure grip tension for greater shot consistency and control. A tacky and responsive feel make SONAR ideally suited for a wide range of players looking for a grip that feels as good as it performs.

Comfort PLUS is the perfect grip for golfers that prefer a soft and shock-absorbing feel, but want the proven durability of a traditional rubber grip. Made with the soft and durable DSX material, Comfort PLUS features a shallow Micro-Texture pattern and unique un-buffed finish to deliver a smoother surface and exceptionally comfortable feel.  The reduced-taper, straighter shape reduces excess grip tension for a smoother, more controlled swing. Finally, an ultra-soft grip with the all-weather performance and durability that only rubber can offer.

TS1 is priced from $9.99 MSPR, and will be offered in Black/Red in both a Standard+ and Midsize+ (+ refers to reduced taper sizing).

SONAR is priced from $8.99 MSPR, and will be offered in Black/Blue in both a Standard+ and Midsize+.

Bridgestone Golf Launches TOUR B XS Tiger Woods Edition Golf Balls

(COVINGTON, GA) – Bridgestone Golf – innovator of premium golf balls, clubs and accessories – unveils the TOUR B XS Tiger Woods Edition golf balls, a collaboration with the 14-time major championship winner that benefits the TGR Foundation, which receives a portion of all proceeds.

The golf balls feature a custom “TIGER” logo that replicates how Woods marks his competition golf balls and distinct packaging to highlight the charitable benefits and limited, special-edition product. From a performance perspective, the Tiger Woods Edition ball is identical to the standard TOUR B XS model, which Woods currently uses on the PGA Tour. The new line ($49.99/dozen) will be carried at participating national retailers beginning April 1st.

“We worked closely with the Bridgestone team to come up with a concept that benefits both golfers and my TGR Foundation, which is very important to me,” says Woods. “The TOUR B XS easily outperforms any ball I’ve ever played. It is incredibly long, but offers excellent feel and spin around the green, which makes me confident in any situation.”

With a decorated career that includes 14 major wins and a record run of 683 weeks as the world’s top-ranked golfer, Woods transitioned to the TOUR B XS before the 2017 Hero World Challenge and has since recorded his best professional finishes since 2013. Beyond playing Bridgestone balls in competition, Woods appears prominently in the company’s marketing campaigns, including the new “You’re Back THERE!” video, available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8c1M4UXBEtg.

“Tiger is a rare athlete who transcends his sport and it’s been a treat for golf fans around the world to watch him compete this season,” says Angel Ilagan, President and CEO of Bridgestone Golf. “Working with both Tiger and the TGR Foundation has been a tremendous experience and we’re excited to build on the popularity of Bridgestone golf balls, while helping a great cause.”

The TOUR B XS Tiger Woods Edition is the newest member of the popular TOUR B Series, the most technologically advanced golf balls Bridgestone has ever produced. The X and XS lines provide low-handicap players with tremendous spin and greenside control due to a soft urethane cover formulation, while increased distance comes from enhanced aerodynamics and an improved 330 Dual Dimple design.

During development, company engineers used data from more than three million in-person and online ball fittings, combined with insights from leading third-party industry sources, to identify needs of specific player types. They then drew on more than 800 golf ball patents to determine which proprietary technologies would most benefit each golfer persona identified.

The line consists of the TOUR B X, XS, RX and RXS (each $44.99) – which provide unmatched feel, accuracy and distance. To help players find the perfect ball for their games, Bridgestone offers two quick, easy and comprehensive fitting options:

  • BFIT Golf Ball Fitting App – Free to download, the app turns the iPhone into a mobile launch monitor by utilizing the camera to analyze the user’s swing and recommend the best Bridgestone ball for his or her game.
  • New Online Fitting Tool – Available at www.bridgestonegolf.com, it accommodates the full spectrum of players. The “Quick Fit” option easily determines the best ball for novices while the in-depth “I Know My Game” presents detailed questions to assist experienced golfers to find the perfect fit. The “I’ve Been Measured” path allows users to input launch monitor data, ensuring the most accurate recommendation possible.

Each TOUR B Series golf ball features proven characteristics which continue to make Bridgestone Golf among the most respected brands in the industry. They include:

  • Accuracy – Gradational core optimizes energy transfer to create low side-spin and high ball velocity for incredible distance and accuracy gains.
  • Consistency – Seamless cover design utilizes injection molding technology to stabilize ball flight on all shots.
  • Distance – Aerodynamically superior dimple profiles provide different player types with vastly enhanced length and control.
  • Feel – SlipRes cover technology increases friction by creating more stability between the ball and club for enhanced control with irons and wedges.

In addition to Woods, Bridgestone Golf’s professional staff includes FedExCup champion Brandt Snedeker, Olympics bronze medalist Matt Kuchar, Masters winner Fred Couples, rising stars Bryson DeChambeau and LPGA stars Lexi Thompson and Cheyenne Woods.
