AB and FOOD

Although I've lived in Astoria, Queens, for twelve years and worked in nearby Long Island City for a few years, I'd never been to Brooklyn Grange until earlier this month. Although the name points to that hipper borough to the south, the Grange's first rooftop farm is located in Queens, specifically on Northern Boulevard, a car-oriented thoroughfare that leads to and from the Queensboro Bridge. I work on Northern Boulevard and frequent the coffee shop in the base of the building where the Grange has its one-acre farm. Faced with a cold- or allergy-related sore throat that wouldn't go away, I headed to the Grange on one of its open Saturdays in June to buy some honey – what turned out to be the most delicious honey I've ever eaten.

[Photos from my visit to the Brooklyn Grange]

I'm bringing up Brooklyn Grange here, in the context of AB's Food issue, because it is a trailblazer of sorts, at least in regards to urban farming in New York City. Created eight years ago as "the largest soil rooftop farm in the world," the Grange bested itself a few years later when it built a 1.5-acre rooftop farm in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Although the farms are for most people out of sight, and therefore out of mind, they are part of the commendable trend of covering flat roofs in cities with green roofs. But of course they go one better and make the rooftops productive. Seen in terms of urban planning, urban farms point to the temporary use of large vacant lots, the potential reuse of big-box stores in suburbs, and the preservation of old industrial buildings in cities; all with the eye of having large enough footprints for cultivation (one acre is certainly a decent size, what I recall from writing about Chicago's Mobile City Farmstead years ago). In this sense, food and architecture are wed strongly together, though of course this is not the only way they relate to each other.

Architecture Boston's summer 2018 issue explores food in many ways – "from measured rituals to decorated spaces to ingenuity of form," as it attests. One section, "Assemble the Ingredients," tackles how "food is changing the way we plan and use urban spaces," be it with rooftop farms, urban beekeeping, "beer urbanism," or other means of local food consumption. The issue has articles on the design of the spaces where we eat (e.g. Four Seasons, RIP), but also one architect-turned-pastry chef that even I couldn't resist: Dinara Kasko. Not only do her creations look tectonic, they are designed using the same 3D software that architects and architecture students use. In the process she has fused the realms of architecture and food to create unexpected yet elegant desserts that I hope taste as good as they look.

CLASSIC MAJOR: Belvedere Golf Club Selected as Host of 2019 U.S. Hickory Open

CHARLEVOIX, MI – Historic Belvedere Golf Club, which has hosted an annual Society of Hickory Golfers major championship since 2006, has been selected to host the major among hickory majors – the U.S. Hickory Open in 2019. The tournament is being planned for June 20-22 of 2019.

“Belvedere is a classic, classic course,” said Rick Meyer, the club’s president. “It is old-school in small town America. When dry and firm, it plays fast and requires a hickory style ground game. Our club and the Charlevoix community are committed to and will host a great championship.”

Meyer lends a unique perspective at Belvedere. The St. Louis resident and entrepreneur is a former board member and green committee chairman at Bellerive Country Club, which in August this year will host the world’s top golfers in the 100th PGA Championship. He has also been part of five championships, including three major championships at Bellerive in the 20-plus years he chaired the Future Championship Committee.

He said the U.S. Hickory Open next year at his summer club will be a “classic final major for me.”

The U.S. Hickory Open annually attracts an international field of golfers who play with authentic pre-1935 hickory shafted golf clubs or can also play replica hickory clubs. Belvedere is the only club in the U.S. to have 44 authentic hickory club players that will participate in the championship. Competitors also dress in period appropriate apparel, including knickers, ties and jackets. The Society of Hickory Golfers celebrates and promotes the hickory game of the 1910s – 1930s.

“The club is very excited about it,” said Dennis “Marty” Joy II, the head golf professional at Belvedere and a competitor in society tournaments.

“Here at Belvedere we have the most hickory society golfers of any club in the country. We have 44 men and women who are members here who play with authentic hickory golf clubs. They are very excited we are hosting the U.S. Hickory Open and a lot of our members will be playing in it.”

The Belvedere Hickory Open has been played 12 times at the course and is considered one of the four major championships by the Society of Hickory Golfers. It will not be presented in 2019 because the Open is coming to Belvedere but will be presented again this year June 14-16.

“I think it was just a matter of time for Belvedere to host the U.S. Hickory Open,” Joy said. “Having our restoration finished last year when a lot of the golfers came for the Belvedere Hickory Open allowed them to see some of the changes. Also, Belvedere takes care of the players and I think they feel like members for the weekend.”

Meyer, 70, said he is honored to be involved in both “majors.”

“The 100th PGA Championship is the culmination event in 25 years of working with the leaders of the USGA, PGA and the Tour,” he said. “Our pro Marty Joy got me interested in hickory golf. My fellow members urged me to try it. Once they hooked me, it seemed like a natural extension of giving back to the game to respond to the desire to host something big at Belvedere, and 18 months later we received the invitation.

“It is not the same challenge of all the work at Bellerive but rewarding just the same. Our respective budgets are just a little different. I already know Bellerive will break many PGA records. I am certain Belvedere and the Hickory Open will also. And on the last day of both Championships, coming down the stretch, the players will care just as much.”

Belvedere’s course, which allows some public play during the golf season, was established in 1925 and designed by renowned golf course architect William Watson. It has been recognized as one of the best golf courses in the Midwest and is best known for hosting 40 Michigan Amateur Championships. It will also host the 2025 Michigan Amateur during Belvedere’s centennial year.

In 2016, the original hand-drawn architectural plans by William Watson were discovered and a two-year restoration plan returned the golf course greens, fairways and many of its tees to the original design of 1925. The changes were completed with architect Bruce Hepner’s help in time for the 2017 Belvedere Hickory Open.

“The changes in just a year of maturity are now really making a difference with the way the course is played, and by the time we host the U.S. Hickory Open it should be fully mature and playing like it did in 1925 for the hickory players,” Joy said.

Meyer’s roots in golf go back to his childhood when his father was an accomplished local amateur in St. Louis, and his work with major championship golf goes back over 50 years.

“I worked for the 1965 U.S. Open (at Bellerive), and I was involved in the inaugural U.S. Mid-Amateur hosted by Bellerive,” he said. “I have been a member of the Executive Committee of St Louis’ Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association for almost 30 years. I’ve officiated at numerous USGA qualifiers.”

He said he has never satisfied his desire to improve his game but continues to try. He has read and studied the game and read about the variety of golf course design philosophies, which led him to be involved in the 2005-06 retrofit at Bellerive. It also led him with then-president Jeffrey Buntin’s support, to be involved in bringing Belvedere back to its classic design roots.

“Bruce Hepner is an accomplished student of minimalist design,” he said. “He has been a great partner who carefully and with great sensitivity to our budget coordinated the project with our indefatigable superintendent, Rick Grunch. I have been fortunate to be involved in all these championships and projects – a true labor of love!”

The Society of Hickory Golfers is currently planning for the 2018 U.S. Hickory Open in September in Greensboro, N.C. at Sedgefield Country Club.

BIG MAX Announces Blade IP Push Cart

BIG MAX FLATTENS THE COMPETITION

With its fourth generation of Fold Flat push cart technology, BIG MAX stays ahead of the imitators with the remarkable BLADE IP

They say imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, so innovators like BIG MAX have to keep moving to stay ahead of the game. With its 4th generation of Fold Flat technology, BIG MAX has done just that, literally flattening the competition with the new, 3-wheel, BLADE IP.

The IP, stands for Intellectual Property, a cheeky reminder for the chasing pack, but the BLADE IP is such a standout product that it will be a hard act to follow. At a folded size of 34 ½” x 24 ½“ and an incredible depth of less than 5” the BLADE IP is hands down, the most easily stored and transported push cart on the market. In its folded state it fits in virtually any car’s trunk with a full golf bag placed on top. If space is truly an issue then the IP will slide neatly behind the front seats with its carry case (sold separately) keeping everything clean.

While the BLADE IP matches the flattest of BIG MAX’s carts, the real step forward for the IP is the folding mechanism. Once the height adjustable handle is folded down, simply fold the cart flat and lift the BLADE IP to see the back wheels automatically flip under the body. With a push of a button on the front wheel, the whole cart folds flat and is ready to be packed away.

Aside from its unique folding and storage qualities, the BLADE IP stands out for its robust, stable construction, that is backed up by a 5 year warranty, and its ease of use on the fairways. Adjustable bag brackets accommodate even the largest Tour bags and the double foot brake keeps the BLADE IP in place even on the hilliest courses. Integrated drink holder, storage compartment in the handle, ball, tee and double scorecard holder keep all your necessities close to hand and multiple Quick Lok and Quick Fix bases are ready to clip in BIG MAX accessories such as an umbrella holder, GPS holder, sand bottle holder, BIG MAX Super Net and BIG MAX Drop Stop Rain system.

Available in Black, Black/Lime, White, White/Lime, Phantom/Red, the BLADE IP retails at $349.99 and will be in stores from the end of June 2018. For more information please visit www.us.bigmaxgolf.co.uk

Chris Lutzke, Long-Time Pete Dye Associate, Becomes Member of America’s Society of Golf Course Architects

Dye protégé accepted into exclusive group of golf course designers

Plymouth, MI – Chris Lutzke, long time Pete Dye design associate and right-hand man for over 20 years, has been accepted into the America’s Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA).

The ASGCA is the premier organization of the golf architecture profession, and membership signifies the ultimate recognition of an architect’s work and a place in history among names like Donald Ross, Robert Trent Jones, Jack Nicklaus and Pete Dye.

“It was a long-term goal and it was important to Pete over the years that I apply,” Lutzke said. “But it was Alice Dye who kept on me and had me get the applications in, do interviews and go in front of the board. Pete and Alice were the driving force and it has been a great long journey.”

A prospective member goes through a two-year application process that tests their knowledge of golf course architecture, training, experience and architectural vision. The prospective member must also be sponsored by three ASGCA members. Dye, Jerry Matthews and Lee Schmidt were the sponsors for Lutzke.

Lutzke started his career in golf course construction in 1986 working on Pete Dye’s masterpiece Blackwolf Run in Kohler, Wis. His passion for design and building along with his creativity and work ethic caught the attention of Dye, who after a short time would offer him a long-term position to work on future projects like Old Marsh and Grand Harbor in Florida.

During Chris’ tenure with Dye he studied and earned two degrees from Michigan State University in Agronomy and Landscape Architecture. His education also included a three-month trip to the British Isles where he was able to research and gain an appreciation of the games architecture at such classic venues as St. Andrews, Carnoustie and Royal County Down.

Lutzke was a quick study under Dye embracing his mentor’s unique vision and strategy in course design. That led him to work on many of Dye’s signature projects, including the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island prior to the 1991 Ryder Cup. He was also largely involved with the renovation of Crooked Stick Golf Club in preparation for the 1991 PGA Championship.

Lutzke was also on-site at the world-famous Whistling Straits courses, The Honors Course in Tennessee, Mystic Rock at Nemacolin Woodlands, and Colleton River Plantation on Hilton Head, which are each ranked among the top 100 golf courses in the world by either Golf Digest or Golf Magazine. Other notable courses he worked on include Teeth of the Dog at Casa de Campo, Brickyard Crossing, Barefoot Landing, and he was the project architect at the Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort.

“I just turned 50 and this is a really good time for me,” he said. “My allegiance has always been with Pete, building and managing projects, but now it feels like a good time to begin showcasing what I have learned from Pete these past 30 plus years. Having been in the dirt for all of these years and working with him on drawings and routings actually transitions perfectly for me to begin creating my own designs and projects.”

Lutzke does have one solo design credited to him, which debuted in East Lansing, Michigan where he designed and built the award-winning Eagle Eye, part of one of the top golf facilities in Michigan, Hawk Hollow, which he also assisted in the design. Eagle Eye is a visually stunning transformation of a former sod farm and cornfield into a British/Irish links style layout featuring a number of Dye subtleties in the shaping, bunkering and green complexes. Dye himself was impressed by Chris’ work saying, “This is Chris’ design and he got it right.”

Lutzke is currently involved in another upcoming Ryder Cup project. This time he is back at Whistling Straits in advance of hosting the 2020 matches.

“We are there overseeing and performing most of the construction to help create an exciting Ryder Cup venue. That’s as much as I can say at this point,” he said. “We are also working with French Lick Resort on a third golf course and doing renovation work at a few other places.”

For more information about Chris Lutzke and Albanese & Lutzke Design, visit http://golf-designs.com.

Bridgestone Golf Names Dan Murphy President and CEO

(COVINGTON, GA) – Bridgestone Golf – innovator and manufacturer of premium golf balls, clubs and accessories – has appointed Dan Murphy as President and CEO.

Murphy was with Bridgestone Golf USA from 2004 to 2015, most recently as Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing. During that tenure, he helped the brand increase market share to No. 2 in the ball category, grew domestic revenue by roughly 250% and negotiated title rights to the PGA Tour’s annual World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club (Ohio).

As President and CEO, he is responsible for directing the company’s core business functions, including product planning and production, marketing, sales and customer relations.

“I’ve been with Bridgestone Golf since the beginning and the passion runs deep,” says Murphy. “We make the most technologically-advanced golf balls in the world and my role is to help ensure Bridgestone is recognized as the industry’s leading example of how science and data is used to make products that improve the performance of all golfers.”

Committed to remaining on the forefront of innovation, Bridgestone draws from nearly 1,000 golf ball patents and the leading rubber experts in the world to design the industry’s best golf balls. A major differentiator over all other brands, it leverages the invaluable knowledge of 900-plus polymer engineers in the R&D process. This engineering and manufacturing expertise is combined with real-world data collected from three million golf ball fittings over the past decade. The result is a line-up of models perfectly customized for any player type, from PGA TOUR superstar to beginner.

Under Murphy, Bridgestone will continue to be the industry’s leading voice on the importance of fitting and customization in the golf ball selection process. The company currently offers two easy and comprehensive fitting options, the BFIT Golf Ball Fitting App and a new online fitting tool. Its diverse ball portfolio includes the TOUR B Series, e6 SOFT, e6 SPEED, Extra Soft, Lady and more.

“Dan’s leadership skills, product knowledge, industry connections and assemblage of talent are exemplary,” says Shigeru Nakayama, Senior Officer for Bridgestone Sports and Chairman of Bridgestone Golf. “He’s unafraid to push the envelope to find ways to make golfers better and, therefore, lifetime Bridgestone loyalists.”

Murphy is enthused by a recent NGF report showing growth of America’s $89.1 billion annual golf economy. Citing the 20 million committed golfers who play 95% of all rounds, he points to Bridgestone’s influence making low handicappers even more competitive. Furthermore, Murphy is keen on Bridgestone’s ball and club technology turning the sport’s 2.6 million newcomers into lifetime golfers.

Since 2015, Murphy was President of textile manufacturer Kentwool and Vice President of American Achievement Corporation. Before joining Bridgestone Golf almost 15 years ago, he held key marketing and business development positions at TaylorMade, Dunlop Slazenger, Maxfli and General Mills.

The appointment of Murphy comes at an ideal time for Bridgestone Golf. Rising star Bryson DeChambeau used the Tour B X ball to win the PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament two weeks ago and catapult to fourth on the official money list. Additionally, the company’s recent introduction of the TOUR B XS Tiger Woods Edition and the e6 SOFT Lady Edition (pearl white finish and pink Bridgestone logo) have proven widely popular.

Milstein Center Nears Completion

McTier Art Joins NextLinks and Shinnecock Nation During U.S. Open This Week

SOUTHAMPTON, NY – In a partnership with the Shinnecock Nation, fans on hand for the 118th United States Open Championship at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club (Southampton, New York) will have the chance to view the vibrant golf artwork of Lucy and Jace McTier (McTier Art).

McTier Art will be showcasing its popular golf paintings through the NextLinks booth located a short walk from the U.S. Open Championship’s Train Station and the championship’s Gate 2. They will also unveil two new golf paintings this week in their collection during the U.S. Open Championship.

The Shinnecock Indian Nation worked closely with the United States Golf Association (USGA) to develop and provide the space that will be showcasing the McTier Artwork around the NextLinks interactive attraction.

The Shinnecock Nation has been part of the fabric at Shinnecock Hills since before 1896, when the second U.S. Open was played. The land was once owned by the Shinnecock Nation and the course was built by members of the Shinnecock Tribe. Since then the Shinnecock have been part of the club working as caddies and on the grounds crew. During past U.S. Open’s, the Shinnecock and USGA have worked together in a variety of ways to help the Shinnecock and this year is no different.

World renown sports artist, Jace McTier and portraitist, Lucy McTier, have been preserving and promoting the history and future of golf through their unique and beautiful paintings of the games greatest players including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Lee Trevino to name a few. Their works of art will also include a depiction of the first round of golf played in America in Yonkers, NY, as well as the legendary Robert Tyre Jones Jr.’s first major win in the 1923 U.S. Open at Inwood Country Club in Inwood, NY.

The McTier artists have painted for presidents and sports superstars from around the globe for nearly half a century.

About McTier Artwork
A portraitist since 1979, Lucy McTier’s work became nationally recognized when she had the opportunity to paint President Ronald Reagan in 1985 and present him with the portrait in the Oval office in the White House with her then five-year old son Jace, and husband David in 1985.

Lucy’s work is hanging in over 350 public and private collections, and in several gallery locations around the world. Her work is primarily in oil on linen, but she offers prints of her work as well. Her work includes wildlife, children’s illustrations, abstracts, realism large landscape/figurative works, religious and commissioned portraits.

Today, her son Jace David McTier is her colleague and partner continuing the family legacy of artwork. His first sporting painting was commission before the 1996 Equestrian Olympic trials when he was just 16 years old. In 2009, he teamed up with Angelo Dundee to recreate the history of boxing through the great trainer’s eyes. This included the “Phantom Punch” (or “Anchor Punch” that lifted Sonny Liston off the canvas and propelled Ali on his path to greatness), which has been displayed all over the world.

McTier’s work has been compared to LeRoy Neiman by a variety publications and collectors. For more information visit www.McTierArt.com and follow them on social media @McTierArt.

Transport and Climate Change

Every time I fly — which amounts to three or four round trips per year — I think about how much fuel planes use to transport people and/or goods from one place to another. Combined with the fact that one plane takes off somewhere in the world once every second, I can only shake the thought out of my head lest I get paralyzed by in considering how many gallons of carbon being spewed continuously into the atmosphere. Ditto when I eat a banana — which happens most days of the week — and the thought of huge cargo ships bringing my breakfast from South America all the way to New York City.

At least I know I'm not alone. The Architectural League is putting on two "Transportation: Connection and its costs" discussions this week as part of its The Five Thousand Pound Life initiative. Both events are moderated by designer Jesse LeCavalier (author of The Rule of Logistics) and sociologist Daniel Aldana Cohen. Below are details on the two discussions.

Aviation and Climate Change
Wednesday, June 13, 7pm at Brooklyn Public Library Central Branch
The development of air travel has been a primary contributor to globalization by collapsing distance and time. Since the mid-twentieth century, demand has consistently grown as flying has come to be perceived as a right of modern society. Global economies rely on transferring people, goods, and ideas with rapid speed, but what are the environmental costs of air travel?

Modern aviation is propelled by fossil fuel, consuming 5 million barrels of oil a day. The industry contributes to 2.5% of total carbon emissions and could rise to 22% by 2050 as other sectors emit less. Although aircraft are becoming more fuel-efficient and some airlines have introduced carbon offset programs, there is currently no green way to fly 8 million people a day.

As part of The Five Thousand Pound Life: Transportation series, this session will explore the future of air travel in the context of climate change. Experts in climate science, the global tourism economy, and airport design will share their work and ideas on what the possibilities are for personal and business travel with a radical reduction in greenhouse gases.

Sea Shipping and Climate Change
Thursday, June 14, 7pm at Brooklyn Public Library Central Branch
Although generally hidden from consumers, international maritime transport is the backbone of the globalized economy and accounts for approximately 2.2% of the world’s CO2 emissions. Despite its significant carbon output, international shipping and aviation emissions are not addressed by global climate-change agreements including the Paris Agreement. Greenhouse gas emissions from shipping are increasing despite improvements in operational efficiency for many ship classes and increasing emissions are being driven by rising demand for shipping and the associated consumption of fossil fuels.

The industry is likely to be affected by wide-ranging and potentially devastating climate change impacts associated with rising sea levels and increased frequency/intensity of extreme weather events. Shipping policies must be applied worldwide to be effective, and the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which regulates international shipping, is engaging — slowly. Last month member countries agreed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2050, but some members believe it’s not enough to combat climate change in smaller island nations.

This session will analyze how the shipping industry impacts and will be impacted by climate change as well as where architects—and consumers – can accelerate innovation and change.

Tickets for both events can be purchased via the event links above.

Book Review: Cook's Camden

Cook's Camden: The Making of Modern Housing by Mark Swenarton
Lund Humphries, 2017
Hardcover, 328 pages

Back at the end of 1999 I took a trip with my family to London for the millennium festivities. Each day I would venture around the city looking at architecture and then join my family for dinner at a pub near the hotel. Most of my day outings focused on newer buildings, such as the Jubilee Line stations and Future Systems' Natwest Media Center, but one of the older buildings I went to see was Alexandra Road Estate, a housing project designed by Neave Brown and completed in 1979. (It's near Abbey Road, making it a two-in-one visit for architects that are fans of the Beatles.) The project is most noticeable for the long, curving concrete terraces facing a pedestrian walk, depicted on the cover of Cook's Camden, an impressive history of modern housing projects built in that corner of London under Camden borough architect Sydney Cook. Although the book tells the stories of numerous projects undertaken by different architects under Cook in the 1960s and 70s, Neave Brown's presence dominates, given that its release last year happened to coincide with the awarding of the RIBA Gold Medal to Brown, who died earlier this year at the age of 88.

In turn, having only visited Alexandra Road, my reading of the book focused on it and Brown's slightly earlier Fleet Road project (spread below). There was some overlap between the two projects in terms of approaches to stacking, unit plans, and shared outdoor spaces, but the impact of Alexandra Road has been more lasting. It was given Grade II* listing status in 1993 (Fleet Road, aka Dunboyne Road Estate, was listed later, in 2010) and its park -- also a notable work of architecture designed with Janet Jack, which I included in 100 Years, 100 Landscape Designs -- was restored just a few years ago. The latter is significant since it was spearheaded by residents, signifying the appreciation of the estate by those who live there, not just by fans of modern architecture or architectural historians like Mark Swenarton.

Three of the book's twelve chapters are devoted to Brown and Alexandra Road. Two of them tell the in-depth stories of Fleet Road and Alexandra Road estates, while the third is titled "Politics versus architecture: the Alexandra Road public enquiry of 1978-81." (An appendix also reprints Neave Brown's "The Form of Housing" essay from 1967.) This last chapter, the book's eleventh, digs into why such a lauded project -- both at the time of its inception in the late 1960s and its listing three decades later -- was seen in in interim as a "constructional disaster." One product of the three-year inquiry was the near-impossibility for Brown to gain work in the UK, even though the protracted inquiry exonerated him; his subsequent notable projects were located in the Netherlands. Those drawn to Brown after his RIBA Gold Medal award will find much to learn in Swenarton's book, though it's also recommended to architects who prefer dense low-rise housing to the residential high-rises that tend to garner more attention today.

Indi Golf Introduces New StingRay TT Wedges

Indi Golf Introduces New StingRay TT Wedges
Featuring Conforming Grooves with Unmatched Feel and Spin

VISTA, CA, March 22, 2018– Indi Golf, design and manufacturer of high performance golf clubs, introduces new StingRay TT wedges featuring optimal spin, control and forgiveness. The StingRay TT conforms with the Rules of Golf and can be played in competition.

“Our new StingRay TT wedge is designed with conforming grooves, yet it still spins 25% more than competitor wedges,” said Rob Lang, General Manager, Indi Golf. “Our design team has taken our forgiving ScoopBack technology and combined it with highly engineered grooves to create the optimal wedge for golfers looking to add more backspin around the green and lower their tournament scores.”

StingRay TT wedges have been engineered with grooves which run along the entire length of the face to optimize launch, improve control, and increase spin. This design increases spin by 25% on a full swing measured using Foresight GCQuad. “After designing our original StingRay wedges that spin 50% more than competitor wedges, our challenge was to design grooves within the Rules of Golf that would still create optimal spin and outperform the competition and we successfully achieved that goal,” added Lang.

In addition to increased spin, Indi Golf’s proprietary ScoopBack design creates maximum forgiveness by moving mass higher in the face, and toward the toe.  This optimizes the location of the club’s CG, making the head more stable on off-center contact, helping shots feel better, go straighter, spin more and end up closer to the hole. The ScoopBack design is not a muscle back or perimeter-weighted design but is a combination that brings the player the best of both worlds.

Other features of the StingRay TT wedges designed to improve performance include:
ShortHosel – Creates discretionary weight that has been position higher in the face and more towards the toe, resulting in higher performance, better feel, and more forgiveness.
Optimized Bounce – Allows the head to glide through the turf yielding solid contact for the grooves to grab the ball and impart maximum spin while producing ideal launch conditions.
LaunchControl – A lower launch and higher spin combination allows golfers to be more aggressive and reduces the influence of elements on the ball.
Straight Leading Edge – Makes the wedge easier to align, giving a player more confidence and resulting in more consistent shots
“Indi Golf is committed to designing quality products that will help golfers perform at their best and enjoy the game more,” continued Lang. “Our line of StingRay wedges will teach players what a great wedge game looks and feels like. We feel wedges have not been researched and put on the same technology path as woods and irons, and we want to continue to close this gap and make the wedge game something that everyone can enjoy and use to improve their game and enjoyment.”

The StingRay TT wedge is available in lofts of 46, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58 and 60-degrees, and conforms with the Rules of Golf. MSRP is $159.99. The StingRay TT wedge is available for pre-sale at www.indigolfclubs.com.

BIG MAX LAUNCHES AWARD WINNING GOLF BAG LINE IN U.S.

#1 European golf bag brand, BIG MAX, launches AQUA and DRI LITE technology in U.S. market.

BIG MAX, Europe’s most owned Push Cart brand and #1 European Golf Bag brand, is launching its award winning technology to the U.S. market. With five great looking designs across two award winning technologies – AQUA and DRI LITE – BIG MAX golf bags are set to make a huge impact when they arrive at retail this June.

The technology underpinning the AQUA line is the new DROP STOP system that guarantees the bags are 100% waterproof. Using waterproof fabric with unprecedented waterproof rating of over 10.000mm*, sealed seams and specially designed Japanese waterproof zippers, the AQUA range delivers an unrivalled level of design and waterproofing using ultra-lightweight, tear resistant and washable materials.

DRI LITE technology delivers a washable, water resistant golf bag that is the equal of what most brands in the market call ‘Waterproof’. Most other brands would call DRI LITE waterproof, but with the time and expertise taken to ensure the AQUA range is 100% waterproof, BIG MAX are happy to call DRI LITE water resistant, knowing it will keep all but the wettest, winter days at bay.

With two award winning technologies at the heart of the construction, each bag in the series is strong, stylish, waterproof and washable. And with a range of excellent features combined with a unique, cool Euro look and feel the new BIG MAX line is the complete package.

The AQUA Sport 2 is the second generation of BIG MAX’s most successful cart bag. With a 14-way, 9.5-inch organizer top, full length dividers, 7 spacious pockets, oversize putter well for large grips and weighing in at just over 5 lbs, the Sport 2 is a leader in the field of practicality. To further enhance its waterproof capability the Sport 2 also has a clear rain hood with dual zips giving easy access from either side. A host of neat features like dual strap and umbrella positions, holders and accessory storage options finish off the practical features on this stylish new addition to the BIG MAX AQUA line.
The AQUA Wave is a stylish, lightweight, and 100% waterproof stand bag. The Wave’s 8 ½” top extends into 4 full length dividers, while its 6 waterproof pockets, air channel straps and ultra-light weight of just over 4lbs make the bag a hugely practical and colorful addition to any golfer’s gear.

With an oversize top the Ocean is designed for ease of use and with 5 waterproof pockets has plenty of storage options. DRI LITE Active offers practical solutions to all a golfers storage needs in a stylish, water resistant package. A 9 ½“, 14 way top and an oversize putter well to fit the largest grips will keep all a golfers clubs in order, while 9 pockets, including fully waterproof valuables pocket, glove, dual umbrella positions and towel holder will pack away even the most well equipped golfers’ gear with ease. May 2018 Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver Statistics Package with Charts & Graphs

Reduced demand is allowing housing supply to accumulate

Home buyer demand continues to decline across the Metro Vancouver* housing market.

The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (REBGV) reports that residential property sales in the region totalled 2,833 in May 2018, a 35.1 per cent decrease from the 4,364 sales recorded in May 2017, and a 9.8 per cent increase compared to April 2018 when 2,579 homes sold.

Last month’s sales were 19.3 per cent below the 10-year May sales average.

Vancouver May Housing Market

“With fewer homes selling today compared to recent years, the number of homes available for sale is rising,” Phil Moore, REBGV president said. “The selection of homes for sale in Metro Vancouver has risen to the highest levels we’ve seen in the last two years, yet supply is still below our long-term historical averages.”
