Greenbrier Ashford Short Course Scheduled for August opening

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. – (May 24, 2018): The newest addition to the award-winning golf offerings at The Greenbrier and The Greenbrier Sporting Club will follow in the tradition of excellence that has become synonymous with America’s Resort, but it will also provide a fresh and unique option for today’s modern golfer.

Scheduled for an August 2018 opening, The Ashford Short Course at The Greenbrier Sporting Club will be a walking-only 9-hole loop of par 3 holes ranging from 56 to 112 yards in length. The holes will pay tribute to revered architects and courses around the world and provide a relaxed family environment that will be entertaining for golfers of all levels and abilities.

Available for both members of The Greenbrier Sporting Club and guests of The Greenbrier, the newest golf offering will perfectly complement the courses already in place – The Old White TPC, which hosts The Greenbrier Classic annually, the redesigned Meadows Course, which features signature stacked sod bunkers, and The Snead Course, an award-winning Tom Fazio design exclusive to members of The Greenbrier Sporting Club.

“The Greenbrier is known around the world for first-class golf, and this is just another example of our commitment to giving guests what they desire,” said Robert Harris, Vice President of Golf at The Greenbrier. “The Ashford will provide an opportunity for something new and different on days where guests and members just don’t have time to play 18 holes. We’re incredibly excited to add The Ashford to The Greenbrier collection.”

In addition to providing a place for beginners to learn the game or an experienced golfer to work out the rust in his or her short game, the course will host unique events like night golf and closest to the pin contests.

The new course’s name, The Ashford Short Course, pays tribute to the rich history at The Greenbrier and remembers a unique moment in The Greenbrier’s more than 240-year past.

In 1942, the historic resort was sold to the United States Army, and it became a hospital for sick and wounded soldiers during World War II. Named for Army physician Col. Bailey K. Ashford, Ashford General Hospital treated more than 25,000 soldiers from 1942 through 1946. It employed 45 doctors, 100 nurses and 500 enlisted men, along with hundreds of volunteers. The recovering servicemen benefited by using The Greenbrier’s immaculate facilities – including the pool, the golf courses and the tennis courts – during their recovery.

“We’re incredibly proud of our history at The Greenbrier, and we want to do all we can to make sure it isn’t lost,” said Dr. Jill Justice, President, The Greenbrier. “The Ashford name honors the men and women who spent time here in service to this great country, and it fits perfectly on this exciting new course.”

Set in the valley floor with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, the course will be accompanied by seven new home sites for members of The Greenbrier Sporting Club.

“With its close proximity to the Members Lodge, the course is convenient for all of our members before or after lunch or dinner or anytime they have a little extra time,” said Larry Klein, Vice President and General Manager of The Greenbrier Sporting Club. “We can’t wait for everyone to try it.”

Bob Hope’s Traveling Exhibition Lands Where His Journey Began – in Ellis Island

After entering America through Ellis Island, Bob Hope’s Hall of Fame traveling exhibition is set to return to the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration on May 26th
ELLIS ISLAND, New York (May 24, 2018) – Since 2011, fans and museum-goers across the United States have had an opportunity to experience the traveling exhibition, “Bob Hope: An American Treasure.” Beginning May 26, 2018 this wildly popular exhibition will make its way back to the place where Bob Hope’s journey to success began – the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument.

Hope immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island in 1908, traveling aboard the S.S. Philadelphia with his mother and five brothers. His life story exemplifies the experience of more than 12 million people who came to the United States through Ellis Island in pursuit of the American dream. The third floor of the Ellis Island Immigration Museum was renamed to the Bob Hope Memorial Library in 2010, a dedication to Hope and his lifetime achievements.

With the support of the Bob & Dolores Hope Foundation, the Hall of Fame spun its “Shanks for the Memory” exhibit into this traveling exhibition. While the World Golf Hall of Fame Member passed away nearly 15 years ago, his legacy has remained alive through this exhibition, which includes rare artifacts, personal memorabilia, video, pictures and a bevy of memories from his contributions to the game of golf and his country.

“We’re thrilled to share Bob Hope’s legacy with the people visiting Ellis Island,” said Jack Peter, President of the World Golf Hall of Fame. “We believe this exhibition will inspire those who see it to achieve their own American dream just as Hope did in his 100 years of life.”

Having toured around the world in museums such as The National WWII Museum in New Orleans, The Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, and the Greenwich Heritage Centre Artillery Square in London during the Summer 2012 Olympics, the exhibition was most recently featured at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center in West Valley City, Utah.

“We welcome Bob Hope back to Ellis Island in spirit,” said John Piltzecker, Superintendent of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island. “All the millions of immigrants passing through Ellis had hopes of freedom, opportunity and success. Mr. Hope certainly achieved those things beyond measure, and this exhibit gives some wonderful insights into his life. We are happy to be sharing his story with our visitors.”

The exhibition features artifacts spanning Hope’s early years, the rise of his stage, screen and radio career, his relationships with U.S. Presidents and his devotion to the U.S. military. Bob Hope is undeniably an emblematic icon in American media history. He appeared in more than 70 films and short films and hosted the Academy Awards a surpassing total of 14 times. Over the course of his 80-year career, he displayed his talents as a comedian, vaudevillian, actor, singer, dancer, athlete and author. Known for his rapid-fire jokes and one-liners, Hope spent decades overseas touring to entertain American troops during World War II.

Arccos Golf Launches Next-Generation Artificial Intelligence Platform

Arccos Golf Launches Next-Generation Artificial Intelligence Platform, Arccos Caddie 2.0, Powered by Microsoft Azure

Golf’s Smartest Caddie Now Provides Real-Time Guidance on Every Shot, Helping Users Play Smarter to Shoot Lower Scores

STAMFORD, Conn., May 24, 2018 – Arccos Golf today announced the release of its next-generation artificial intelligence platform, Arccos Caddie 2.0, which now provides players with real-time strategies for every shot on any hole in the world. Powered by Microsoft Azure, Arccos Caddie has also been made a free feature for all users of the Arccos 360 system.

Recently honored among the “World’s Most Innovative Companies 2018” by Fast Company, ranking #3 in the Sports category, Arccos boasts the golf industry’s richest data set. This includes over 100 million shots hit during 1 million rounds played by the Arccos community, and 418 million GPS mapping data points on 40,000+ courses worldwide. Through a series of hackfests and other collaborations, these resources were harnessed by Arccos engineers and Microsoft’s world class A.I. scientists. The result is a significant expansion of Arccos Caddie’s capabilities.

“The entire sports landscape is being revolutionized by advanced analytics, and golf is the most ideal sport for the application of these concepts,” said Sal Syed, Arccos CEO and Co-Founder. “Working with Microsoft, we’re plugging into a very traditional framework – the caddie/player relationship – and taking it to the next level through the power of A.I. Considering only 3% of golfers today have access to advice from a human caddie, we’re also helping democratize the caddie experience by making it available to anyone.”

Arccos Caddie 2.0 uses a wide variety of inputs to provide a golfer with real-time insights into their optimal and alternative strategies, as well as outcome predictions, for every shot they play. Factors considered include but are not limited to:
A user’s shot history
The historical performance of other Arccos users
Wind speed/direction and other weather conditions
Elevation changes
Hole geometry
Hazard locations
“The PGA TOUR has done a great job of using advanced analytics to help its players practice and perform their best,” said Mike Downey, Director, Principal Evangelist – Sports at Microsoft. “At other levels of the game, capturing the necessary on-course data has been a real challenge. Arccos has cracked that code and built a robust data set which they’re deploying via the Microsoft Azure cloud to the benefit of golfers worldwide.”

Winner of the Golf Digest Editor’s Choice Award for “Best Game Analyzer” three years running, the Arccos platform helps golfers of all skill levels play smarter to shoot lower scores. In 2017, Arccos users improved their handicap by an average of 3.55 strokes – a rate that’s 46.7x faster than the average player with a USGA handicap.

“Arccos Caddie demonstrates A.I. complementing human capability,” added Steve Guggenheimer, Corporate Vice President – A.I. Business at Microsoft. “Through the power of Microsoft Azure, amateur golfers have information at their fingertips that was not easily available before. A.I. will have a huge effect on the golf industry, and it is an exciting time to be in this space as we help Arccos lead the charge.”

In addition to Microsoft, Arccos is an official partner with Cobra Puma Golf, which recently launched golf’s first smart set, Cobra Connect Powered by Arccos. As part of this ongoing collaboration, every club in the Cobra KING F8 line features an Arccos sensor embedded in the grip. This helps players improve faster by automatically tracking and receiving actionable insights for every aspect of their game.

CARRIAGE HOUSE OPENING COMPLETES RECONSTRUCTION OF THE GOLF COURSE AT ADARE MANOR

Brand New Clubhouse, Restaurant, Bar and Terrace adds to 5* golf experience at the County Limerick castle and golf resort

Ireland’s newest five-star castle and golf resort in County Limerick, Adare Manor, has officially opened its Carriage House, offering a resort dining destination to complement The Golf Course at Adare Manor. The Carriage House, where guests can enjoy an artisan grill experience in a stylishly relaxed atmosphere, is complete with a glamorous cocktail bar and lounge, spacious glazed terrace, cigar lounge and private dining chamber.

Renovated to match the standards of The Golf Course, The Carriage House will welcome the resort’s golfers pre and post-round with an ambiance of relaxed elegance and effortless luxury. Every detail of the interior design has been chosen to celebrate the natural beauty of Adare Manor’s estate, whilst the glazed terrace makes it possible for guests to soak-up the estate’s impressive vistas year-round.

Paul Heery, General Manager of Adare Manor, said: “There has been much anticipation of the opening of The Carriage House Restaurant, Terrace and Bar. Our great team at Adare Manor have enjoyed putting the finishing touches to this wonderful addition to the resort with every detail complementing the views of the surrounding landscape of the Adare Manor estate and newly reopened golf course. We want all our guests to enjoy a comfortable, relaxing, yet luxurious dining experience, with the very best of Irish produce.

“Since we re-opened Adare Manor late last year, we have received huge local support, and we have welcomed guests from Adare, throughout Ireland and internationally. With the opening of The Carriage House, we look forward to now offering a new guest experience.”

Adare Manor recommends golfers visit The Terrace at the Carriage House where a relaxed breakfast menu can be enjoyed ahead of tackling the newly renovated Tom Fazio-designed golf course. Equally, lunch and light dining options reward golfers post-round with fresh local produce taking centre stage. Refined salads and sandwiches as well as gourmet pizzas are masterfully prepared in front of diners’ eyes in the show-kitchen, located in the heart of The Terrace.
The Carriage House rounds-off Adare Manor’s world-class golf experience following a two-year reconstruction commissioned by the ownership of the Adare Manor resort, the McManus Family, which saw the unveiling of The Golf Course at Adare Manor in April 2018. Presenting a layout to rival the finest in the world, the Fazio Design and Adare Manor teams have established a 7,509-yard championship golf course created to the most exacting of standards. Now with the Carriage House in operation, Adare Manor provides golfers with a complete luxury on and off course experience, including a comprehensively stocked Pro Shop and welcoming locker rooms.

Details of the new dining experience offered at The Carriage House are below:

The Carriage House Restaurant

The Carriage House Restaurant showcases the best in artisanal and local produce, prime Irish dry aged beef and fresh fish. Open for dinner daily, the menu shines a spotlight on Irish favourites with an elegant flare, including Connemara lamb and Atlantic lobster, alongside some of the best prime cuts of beef, grilled using sustainably sourced charcoal. The architectural highlight of the restaurant is its beautiful central skylight and delicate seeded glass panels that allow natural light to flood the room, offering an artfully lit ambiance from day to night. For private dining, The Carriage House offers an elegant private Chamber to accommodate parties of up to 28 persons, which can also double as an exclusive meeting room.

The Bar

The Bar is the social heart of the resort, offering light bites alongside a remarkable collection of fine wines, craft beers, and sophisticated cocktails. Designed as a perfect union of traditional Irish culture and elevated contemporary styling, the rich leathers, dark-stained oak furnishings and an impressive Breccia Capraia marble framed fireplace, offer a sense of timeless luxury.

The Terrace and The Cigar Lounge

The glazed Terrace is a culinary destination serving lunch and breakfast daily. Boasting striking views of the putting green of the newly reopened golf course and manicured landscape, the Terrace perfects the transition between indoors and out. Taking centre stage is the open show-kitchen, allowing guests to observe as chefs artfully prepare refined salads, sandwiches and gourmet pizzas. Adjoining the Terrace through a glazed wall is the intimate Cigar Lounge, perfect for those yearning to pair their smoke with a rare Irish whiskey from the hotel’s exceptional collection.

The Lounge

The Carriage House Lounge is a haven of peace and relaxation, an ideal area for reading or quiet conversations. In the evening, the lounge becomes a welcoming extension to the bar, where guests can relax over a drink or enjoy the company of friends.

The Golf Course at Adare Manor and Pro Shop

The Golf Course at Adare Manor was re-opened last month by four world-renowned Irish golfing stars, Rory McIlroy, Padraig Harrington, Paul McGinley and Shane Lowry. The course was completely redesigned, remodelled and rebuilt by a team lead by leading golf course architect Tom Fazio. Over a two-year reconstruction period, the Fazio Design and Adare Manor team created a 7,509-yard championship golf course to the most exacting of standards with the goal of establishing the course amongst the finest in the world. The Carriage House also offers a comprehensively stocked Pro Shop and welcoming locker rooms for golfers in the clubhouse.

Adare Manor plays a key role in the local community and it is estimated that the resort will contribute in excess of €15 million to the local economy annually.

Book Review: Exhibiting the Postmodern

Exhibiting the Postmodern: The 1980 Venice Architecture Biennale by Léa-Catherine Szacka
Marsilio, 2017
Paperback, 264 pages

One week from today the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale opens to the public. To get myself in the mindset for a trip to Venice to cover the event for World-Architects, I just read this book that takes an in-depth look at the 1980 Biennale, what is considered the first true architecture Biennale in Venice (the art Biennales date back to the late 19th century). I've known about the The Presence of the Past exhibition, curated by Paolo Portoghesi, for a while, mainly through images of the "Strada Novissima" in the Arsenale. But reading Léa-Catherine Szacka's case study of the exhibition, I realized just how narrow my understanding was – limited in large part to a superficial appreciation of the twenty Postmodern facades lining the "Strada." But the exhibition was a bit more than those false fronts, and the lasting contribution of the exhibition is much more than the coming together of numerous Postmodern architects to create a temporary street. The book does an excellent job of presenting the exhibition's background, its reality during the Biennale (with many images I've never seen before, some unfortunately too small given the page layout), and its influence since. Here are some of the more interesting things I learned in the book – things either I never knew or have forgotten over the years:

  • It was the first Biennale to be held in the Arsenale. Having been to four Biennales, I take their presence in the Arsenale for granted. But when Portoghesi encountered the long, impressive space, the military machines inside were covered in 20-30cm of dust.
  • The 1980 Biennale was highly political, both in terms of Italian politics, which greatly impacted the Biennales of art from 1968 to 1980, and the internal politics of the organizers.
  • Case in point, Kenneth Frampton was originally one of the exhibition's organizers, but he resigned three months before the show opened, due to the "collage-pastiche" direction of the show. He wrote a text critical of the event; it would have gone into the exhibition catalog but instead became the basis for his essay "Towards a Critical Regionalism" in The Anti-Aesthetic.
  • The "Strada Novissima" facades were built by set builders who worked in the film industry in Rome but were basically unemployed at the time.
  • The architects had exhibition spaces behind the "Strada Novissima" facades. So in addition to the relatively flat, full-size images created along the "street," the architects displayed projects through more conventional means: photographs and models.
  • The exhibition in the Arsenale also had a mezzanine. Paolo Portoghesi was one of the 20 architects responsible for a facade in the Arsenale, but the space behind it was given over to a stair that took visitors upstairs to an exhibition of younger architects.
  • The Presence of the Past had a display devoted to critics.Without Frampton, the critics were three: Charles Jencks, Christian Norberg-Schultz, and Vincent Scully. Meant to create intellectual debate among the positions of the various contributors via texts throughout the exhibition, the small display space that was ultimately built isolated them and made their contributions less memorable.
  • The "Strada Novissima" traveled to Paris and San Francisco in 1981 and 1982, respectively. In each city, the message and means of display were modified to suit their new contexts: in an octagonal space in Paris and a linear space with the addition of a forced perspective in San Francisco.

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. … Eaton announced today that its Golf Pride Grips Division was the overwhelming choice in swing and putter grips used at the 2018 Players Championship, with 116 players trusting the brand without any paid endorsements.
